Acromegaly
I was Diagnosed with a rare disease called Acromegaly in November1998 I had a Large Tumor removed from my brain.
I'm doing fairly well with the acromegay. It is a horrible thing it's very rare. It is caused by a tumor on the pituitary gland.If you get it as a baby it's called gigantism if you get it as an adult as I did its acromegaly. Its when your body produces too much growth hormone and your bones continue to grow. It enlarges your internal organs as well, so my doctors are always watching for things(heart, liver etc). The brain tumor will also come back eventually( acromegaly causes brain tumors) but they can catch in time and reduce it with medication . this last time it had been growing for 10 years and I had no idea. I had headaches and high blood pressure but my doctor was treating me for sinus problems. I got bigger,taller,fatter,larger my whole body and my period stopped but my gynecologist assumed it was early menopause. My eyesight worsened but I thought I needed bifocals, I was actually going blind because the tumor was pushing on my optic nerve. It wasn't until I went to the doctor crying that he had to do something about my headaches. After the MRI I was rushed to Cleveland Clinic and had surgery within a day of the doctor there seeing me. He told me I had maybe if I was lucky 5 years to live if I didn't have the surgery. but he also said I would have gone blind before that and the tumor was also pushing on the cardioid artery and when it pinched it closed I would die, probably sooner than later. but I'm fine now no pills no chemo nothing, for 10 years so far. And actually my weight and body has dramatically reduced in size since my surgery. So I thank God everyday that I'm still here. I don't take anything for granted. |
